| | Scanning Suggestions The following information is provided for clients who wish to scan their own photos.
- Most scanners have an option of scanning your input as a "Document" or a "Picture". You want to scan as a "picture". Save options will be different for a document versus a picture.
- If your pictures have been handled a lot, you can dust them with something like a clean or new cosmetics brush. If you order Deluxe we will clean most dust and scratches that remains, digitally, as needed.
- Scan average size photos (example 4"x6") at 300 dpi. If you have a very small photo (2"x3") scan it at 600 dpi. Your jpg (image) file sizes should typically be greater than 200kb. Check the file size of your first scan to be sure you are on track with the right resolution. Your pixel size for your cropped down images should typically be greater than 1000 pixels for the shortest side. Don't scan higher than 600 dpi as that is a waste of time and space, since it is of no use. DPI is dots per inch - the number of dots in a linear one inch square space. If your scanner suggests using a lower dpi resolution just ignore its' advice. If you open an image in Microsoft Paint, you can click Image, then Attributes to view your image's pixel size.
- Scan your photos in the order that you want them to appear on your video - so they will be in that order on your CD.
- Align your photos so they are square with the scanner surface.
- Make sure your pictures are free of dust and keep the scanning surface clean - check the surface every 10 photos or so to make sure it is still clean.
- Crop your photos so there are no large white areas around the pictures.
- Save your scanned images in jpg format (don't use PDF, tiff, gif, nor bmp).
